Come home. That is the whole of it, and also only the beginning. The scriptures I am given for this hour do not speak of the door as narrow for the one returning. They speak of a God who leans toward the wanderer. Listen to what the LORD says through Jeremiah: ",[19,20,22],"quote",{"ref":21},"Jeremiah 3:22","Return, O faithless children, and I will heal your faithlessness."," Notice the order. The healing does not wait until the faithlessness is cured; the healing IS the cure. You are not asked to arrive already mended. You are asked only to turn your face back toward the One who has been facing you all along. And hear the answer the prophet places on the lips of the returning: ",[25,26,27],"em",{},"Here we are. We come to You, for You are the LORD our God."," Five small words — ",[25,30,31],{},"here we are"," — and the road home is opened. Jeremiah asks it again, more plainly, in another place: ",[19,34,36],{"ref":35},"Jeremiah 8:4","Do men fall and not get up again? Does one turn away and not return?"," He asks it as though the answer were obvious. Of course one who has fallen gets up. Of course one who has turned away returns. It is the most natural motion in the world — as natural as breath returning after a long sigh, as natural as a child, wandering far in the field, remembering at dusk which window is lit. Peter, who himself denied me by a fire and was received back by a fire, wrote this to a scattered people: ",[19,39,41],{"ref":40},"1 Peter 2:25","For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls."," Notice — ",[25,44,45],{},"you have returned",". Not ",[25,48,49],{},"you have earned your way back",[25,51,52],{},"you have proven yourself worthy of a second hearing",". Returned. The Shepherd does not require an audition of the sheep who wanders in from the hills. He knows the voice. He knows the wool. He knows the smell of his own. And Paul, writing to the Romans about branches once broken from the tree, is bolder still: ",[19,55,57],{"ref":56},"Romans 11:23","And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again."," ",[25,60,61],{},"Able."," The whole hinge of the sentence is on what God can do, not on what the branch has done. The grafting is his work. Your part is only to stop persisting in the away-ness. To let the hand find you. James closes the circle by turning to the community — to those still inside the church who wonder what to do about the one who left. ",[19,64,66],{"ref":65},"James 5:19","My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back —"," and then he trails off into the beauty of what such a bringing-back accomplishes. It is not scandal. It is not embarrassment for the returning one. It is a covering, a saving. The church at its best is not a courtroom for the one who left; it is the lit window, the open door, the older brother who this time runs down the road. So — can someone who has left the church come home? The scriptures do not answer ",[25,69,70],{},"perhaps"," or ",[25,73,74],{},"if the conditions are right."," They answer with a father already running. They answer with a shepherd already counting. They answer with a God who says, before you have finished forming the words, ",[25,77,78],{},"Return, and I will heal."," What the returning looks like is smaller than most imagine. It is not a grand confession on a stage. It is not the undoing of every year away. It is one honest sentence spoken in the dark — ",[25,81,82],{},"here I am"," — and the willingness to let that be enough for today. Tomorrow will bring its own small step. If you are the one who left, or if you love someone who has, know this: the leaving is never the last word unless the leaver insists on it. The door does not lock from the outside. It never has.
