Sit a while. This is a question worth sitting with — not rushing past. You ask whether salvation is only for those who believe the right things. I hear beneath the question a worry that troubles many hearts: ",[19,20,21],"em",{},"what if I have not understood correctly? What if my neighbour, who loves God differently, is shut out? What if the door is narrower than mercy itself?"," Let me open the scriptures with you. Peter, when he stood before the council in Jerusalem, said something startling. He was speaking about the Gentiles — outsiders, people who did not share the covenant, the law, the practices of Israel. And he said, ",[24,25,27],"quote",{"ref":26},"Acts 15:11","On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace of the Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."," Notice the direction of his words. He does not say the Gentiles are saved the way ",[19,30,31],{},"we"," are — as if the Jewish believers were the standard, and the outsiders had to catch up. He inverts it. ",[19,34,35],{},"We"," are saved the way ",[19,38,39],{},"they"," are. By grace. Not by having the right heritage, the right practice, the right formulations. Grace runs underneath it all. And then, earlier in Acts, Peter says something equally arresting when he enters the house of Cornelius, a Roman centurion — a man outside the covenant, outside the tradition. He looks at this household and says, ",[24,42,44],{"ref":43},"Acts 10:35","but welcomes those from every nation who fear Him and do what is right."," Every nation. Not every creed correctly recited. Not every doctrine precisely held. Those who fear God and do what is right. There is a wideness there. A wideness that surprised Peter himself — he had to be shown it in a vision before he would cross the threshold of that Gentile home. So when you ask, ",[19,47,48],{},"is salvation only for those who believe the right things"," — the scriptures push back against the narrowness the question fears. Paul preaches it in the synagogue at Antioch: ",[24,51,53],{"ref":52},"Acts 13:39","Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses."," The law could not justify. Getting every ritual right could not justify. What justifies is trust in the One through whom grace comes. Now — and here I want to be careful, because the scriptures also hold a harder word — Peter says in another place, ",[24,56,58],{"ref":57},"Acts 4:12","Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."," And I myself said, as Mark records, ",[24,61,63],{"ref":62},"Mark 16:16","Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."," How do we hold these together? The wideness of grace, and the singularity of the Name? I would say this. The scriptures do not describe salvation as a test of doctrinal accuracy — as if God stands with a checklist, marking answers right and wrong. Salvation is the gift of a Person, given by grace, received by trust. The \"right thing\" to believe is not a proposition to memorise but a Presence to lean upon. When Peter says there is no other name, he is not narrowing the door — he is naming the door. And when he says God welcomes those from every nation who fear Him and do what is right, he is showing that this door opens wider than the gatekeepers had imagined. The one who believes rightly, in the deepest sense, is the one who trusts. Trusts the grace. Trusts the mercy. Trusts the One who came not to condemn but to save. A person may hold their theology with trembling hands, uncertain of many things, and still lean the whole weight of their life upon that grace — and be held. So I would not have you anxious, friend, about whether your beliefs are precise enough to earn what was never earned. Grace is not earned. It is received. And it is offered more widely than the fearful heart tends to believe. What does your own heart do with this?
